Easy but Difficult short stories : Conan Doyle’ s From the Files of Sherlock Holmes, Reviewed

Kiko Sato, Y11 This book would be the first all-English book I picked up. I still remember buying it as part of my studies because I like mystery novels and it seemed easy enough for me, a beginner in English, to read.  When it was decided that I would go to an international school in Colombia, I went to a Japanese bookstore to buy textbooks to improve my English for preparation for my first international school. In fact, I had no intention of buying this book at all at the bookstore until my mother showed me this book and I opened it. I was not sure if I would be able to read the book, because for me it was as difficult as solving a Japanese maths problem to keep reading a book written with words and phrases I did not understand. In the end, I decided to buy the book since I knew it was perfect for English language learners, but I still had concerns about whether I could keep reading it.  This book contains 3 short stories from the story of Sherlock Holmes such as The R...

A Twist On The Typical Venom Story: Paul Jenkis’ and Humberto Ramos’ Spectacular Spider-Man (issues from 1 to 5) Reviewed.

By Pablo Gutiérrez, Y11 When thinking about Venom, one of the main antagonists in the Spider-Man stories, we mostly imagine the character of Eddie Brock and the Symbiote, the two components that form the Venom character, having a strong friendship with similar motivations. But, in this comic book the relation between these two characters has been changed to give it a more original touch to it.  When opening a Spider-Man Comic book the only thing to expect is a satisfying amount of action and an interesting conflict between characters. However, it also has to be intriguing and original but well, we know a lot of stories of Spider-Man and doing something new is difficult knowing the infinite quantity of comics that he has and regardless of that, surely this book satisfied my need for original stories. With help of its dark ambient, spectacular artstyle and new characterizations it gives it a new curious feeling.  This new story has us in a time where Spider-Man is already ...

Have you ever looked at the stars and thought about someone? Here is the beautiful love story and incredible book of John Green that now is adapted in a movie that can be found at Disney plus as “the fallout in our stars”

Maria Camila Chaparro, Y11 Fallout in our Stars is a book that opens your eyes to what the life of a person with one of the worst diseases someone could have, cancer, is really like. It is a very realistic book with several events in Hazel's life that make us doubt if it is really worth living a limited life, being afraid to do or say things or if it is better to live life to the fullest having several anecdotes to tell. I really liked this book because it taught me that you shouldn't be afraid when doing things because later you can regret it and be left wondering what would have happened or because you never know when your last day of life will be.  In the book, Hazel is a girl of 16 years old that's fighting with cancer, so her mom decides to take her into a support group where one of her friends called Patrick, who was the leader of this group and also Isaac, was someone that she got to know there. Over there she got to know a lot of people with cancer, ones that were ...

A Book that can change your mind quickly: Mel Robbins’s The 5 Second Rule

Image
by Mariana Bustillos, Y11 Have you ever thought about how differently and close you would be to approaching your goals if you treated every moment as a five-second countdown to action?  Before I opened the virtual library, I was looking for a book that is motivational and interesting at the same time, not a book that contains a really long intro and a slow plot that takes so much to develop a story. Then, in my book research I found The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins. I must say that the gold colour letters in the cover captured my attention. The genre was motivational. I thought it was also capturing the way it says the number “5” as the title, because it gives an idea that in five seconds maybe you can make up different things or something different will happen to you in a matter of five seconds. When I first started reading the book, I always checked how long it was, it wasn't that long. However, I didn’t read and advance as much as I should have done to finish the book sadl...
