Poem

Isabel Talero It’s funny to see, after spending years fascinated by the great tragedies of history, I might be living one myself. It feels bittersweet and eye opening, on one hand, how this uncommon series of unfortunate events feeds shamelessly my morbid desire of knowing what can go wrong next. At the same time that I desperately wish it will be over soon. It’s not easy going through the realization that all your plans have changed, and that the life that surrounds you is tiptoeing on the edge. Time leaps and pauses, in a never ending dance of alien monotony as I hit my 18th day trapped in this viciously comfortable cage. By looking outside the door, I constantly get swallowed by the roaring chaos of the world. Therefore I've decided to have a glance, to dive, to burst, in the sea of unsolved chronicles that i carry inside. Ironic as it sounds, living as myself does not mean in living in myself. So I decided to adventure in the living maz...

The Elephant Vanishes by Haruki Murakami - The influence of Western Culture in Japanese society

Sofia V. Rincon Olavez Mon 4 May 2020 10:50 ET The conflict between the Concept of Wa and Western culture in Japan is predominant in The Elephant Vanishes, a collection of short stories published in 1993 by Haruki Murakami. As a result of the Concept of Wa, Japanese society was based on the idea of unity and sacrifice for the greater good of a community. Nonetheless, after the arrival of the American Commodore Matthew Perry to Japan in July of 1853, the Japanese were greatly influenced by Western culture. Though the concept of Wa remains engraved in the core of their culture, western ideologies were able to make their way onto the lifestyles of the Japanese civilization. In contrast to the Concept of Wa, western culture emphasizes the idea of individuality. The clash between these two cultures is heavily portrayed in the works of Haruki Murakami. Throughout the seventeen short stories in The Elephant Vanishes the reader can notice that most characters are primarily detached fro...

How to avoid being late for school or work: Get ready fast with these 5 hacks!

Carlos Andres Mendez HACK #1 PREPARE EVERYTHING THE NIGHT BEFORE! Starting with the hacks, you are going to begin with something a little boring but it will help you a lot for the next day to save time. Get ready your suitcase, bag, backpack, projects and any other important thing you have to carry the next day.   Also prepare the outfit that you are going to use for the next day, so that you do not stay deciding about what you are going to wear. HACK #2 CHOOSE THINGS THAT WILL HELP YOU START YOUR DAY WITH A GOOD MOOD. Just when you go to sleep, set the alarm, if you want to put even one or two more just in case. For the sound of the alarm, choose something cheerful, that you like and even make you want to dance. I highly recommend JBalvin and his new album "Colores". When you go to sleep, leave the cell phone on the other side of the room, for in the morning when it sounds, it forces you to get out of bed and turn it off, and you will not want to ...

The best tips to not get bored during quarantine time! Even if you are already bored…..

Maria Alejandra Motta We are all living a reality that we don’t believe to be true. Staying home feels like the most horrible nightmare. Yet, we need to live it and do the best to not enter an emotional crisis. For this, here I bring you tips to not bore during quarantine! 1. Accept Yes, first accept reality. Accept that you are at home and that you need to stay. Don’t think of the desire to go out. Look through the light and enjoy the view of it. Accept that, as Saldarriaga (2017) said, you are in the best scenario you can be: your home and feel as if you were your own host. 2. Do something new Even if you don't like something, try now, only as experience. If you have never cooked, do it for the ones you live with or for yourself. If you have never decorated something, try to put your style to a place or object in your home. If you have never searched for something around your home, try to. You will find beautiful memories. Be creative with you! 3. Help You would not fe...

Monologue

Vanessa Acosta Monologue I remember everyday traffic, and I remember summer air. I remember people running to catch their buses, and I remember how calmly trees move their leaves with the rhythm of the breeze. But specifically, I remember expressing love and hate to another human being; or at least I don't want to forget it. Sometimes my head collapses with my messy memories, but ironically I carry them as the most priceless treasures. Being surrounded by four walls and a bed makes you overthink. Perhaps some people think a lot about their past and possible futures, perhaps others prefer to dont think and just live in the present. I would prefer to live in the present, but instead I usually get attached to my thoughts. I think that's because I would give up everything to hug and kiss again, and of course, to debate with someone else. I think that was the best part about human interactions; hearing another point of view different from yours. But what I miss will never come b...

Zoos Should be Banned

Image
By: Daniela Camargo Animals were born to be free! But instead we keep them in closed spaces like zoos. Zoos are a way of entertainment for people. They hold multiple animals, in order to exhibit them to the public. But some of the species in zoos are taken out of their natural habitat without any need. And this is not okay. We can not be selfish and put our own entertainment first. Animal rights are important and should be a priority. We are violating the animal’s right of freedom! I deeply believe zoos should no longer exist. Image: AVMA Studies have said that captive animals suffer from a mental disorder called zoochosis. This disorder causes animals to have uncommon behavior such as frustration since they do not have enough room to live. Animals in zoos live in jails. Also, confined animals get used to depend on people, as they do everything for them like providing them food. They forget about their natural tendencies and if the animal is returned to its natural habitat the...

Point/counterpoint: Should you become vegetarian?

Image
Image: Carnivore and Vegetarian You definitely should try it By Carlos Andrés Méndez  Have you ever thought about going veggie? In trying something different? Well, this is time to give a yes for these questions. There are so many reasons to become a vegetarian. Some people choose to follow this type of diet due to becoming healthier, avoiding genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or even because of more personal reasons such as religion, animal rights and environmental concerns. When you are completely sure about having this lifestyle you will have to choose which foods are you going to avoid and also come up with a plan to make sure that you receive all the nutrients and minerals your body needs. One of the best reasons to become a vegetarian is simply that you will do the earth a favor. The production of pollution will decrease. However, is not even 0,001% the change you will make because of the amount of people found on earth, but the change has to start somew...
